About WCUGWiltshire computer user group is for everyone no matter what skill level or age, the group is for the community of computer users in the local area. Anyone is welcome to join and take part if you need any help with computer related problems please post a message on the forum, we look forward to helping if we can, if you can help members with technical problems on the forums then please do so after all this is about helping each other as a community. What the group does
Monthly meetings To discuss technology related topics, help share news about the latest news in the computer world and of course have a few pints of beer as most of the meetings are held in pubs. Each meeting will have a topic for example, "Skype" Skype is a VoIP application. In basic terms its a bit of software that lets you make FREE or very cheap telephone calls over the Internet via a computer. At the meeting we will give a fifteen minute guide to what Skype is and how it works, how to setup your software and hardware etc. Each meet will be a different topic so keep an eye out or suggest a topic yourself for the next meet!
WCUG Website and web forums The wcug.co.uk site is designed to allow all members to read the latest tech news, to find out about the next meet, or just to chat with the community. The site also allows any member to post a new article directly to the main site. The web forum is used for community chat, posting technical support requests, posting support advice and much more. Support The forums provide great technical support as do the face to face meet, if you are unable to make a meet or feel that you need some more one on one help or training, a few of our members will be happy to pay a home visit, this may cost you of course however generally this is much cheaper than calling in the local computer retailer. Events Everyday of the week new technology is being shown off to the trade or to the public, we will try to list as many of these shows as possible in advance so that we are able to go as a group to some of these great events. Shows like "Computer Trade Only (CTO)", Linux User Radio (Lug Radio), Official Microsoft software release shows etc WCUG and the community I would like to see us giving as much back to the community as possible so if anyone has any ideas about events we could do to help then please email. henry @ wcug.co.uk
The History of WCUG
WCUG was setup in late 2007 by Henry Tarling, I moved to wiltshire in 2007, leaving behind my old Linux User Group and Computer User Groups, from both Gloucestershire and Herefordshire. Before long I was missing the group meetings and community, so I started to look for a local group in Wiltshire, after not being able to find one I started WCUG, official launch date January 2008. Click here to see my site blog The FutureI would very much like to add many more members to the group and expand to maybe at maximum four meetings a month, one each week in different areas, It would be great if we could have a topic for each meet but for the moment we will just go with the flow. also I would like to add a Linux User Group section and would welcome anyone wanting to help with this. The MeetingsThe main meet at the moment is going to be held in the Kings Arms at Calne, Richard snell the owner of the kings arms has offered us use of the pub and will be happy to provide free Wi-Fi access and also power points, so bring along you laptop if you can. The meeting are great places to meet new people and find out face to face what is happening in the computer world. If you have a technical problem that we can't solve via the forums or tech tips section of the site we can normally find a fix at the meetings.
